Learn the Fundamentals of Bamboo Design and Construction.
Here in Bali, bamboo is redefining the rules of architecture and design, because we believe the future must be both beautiful and sustainable. The Bamboo U 11 Day Intensive follows a detailed curriculum taking you through the whole life cycle of bamboo from sustainable forestry to design and construction. Visit Green School
Green School is where our bamboo movement started. It is internationally regarded as one of the World’s most uniquely sustainable campuses pioneering the way we approach architecture. Lead by some of the projects’ original architects, we will take you on an architectural guided journey through the campus where you will be given a detailed understanding on design principles. To further this understanding you will be given access to the Green School campus outside of school hours.
The IBUKU Design Office
The design firm IBUKU is the source of some of the most awe-inspiring bamboo structures in Bali and abroad. Get a chance to meet the designers and architects who work in this studio.
Bamboo Factory Tour
To understand bamboo you have to understand the supply chain. We source our bamboo from local farmer collectives in Bali and Java, but all the treatment, processing and furniture production happens in our factory. You will receive a uniquely tailored tour of our factory to understand the fundamental steps required for treatment before site delivery and bamboo furniture construction.
Discover Kul Kul Farm
Sustainability is about more than just bamboo! The Kul Kul Farm – original crib of Bamboo U – is an educational permaculture site. You’ll eat fresh food from the farm during Bamboo U and you’ll get a chance to tour our permaculture systems onsite.
Forestry & Harvesting
The bamboo journey begins with a bamboo seedling. We explain its entire life cycle in full detail through playful education. Theoretical knowledge is firstly given followed by hands-on practice. We guarantee that you leave this experience with an understanding of bamboo as a fantastic means of substitution for hardwoods and that you find bamboo to be a beautiful sustainable building material.
Treatment & Preservation
Bamboo is a relatively new material for modern architecture. Thanks to the discovery of new boron based treatment solutions bamboo is now a durable material. You will discover that there are several ways to treat bamboo. These methods will be explained so that you will be able to make an informed decision on which technique is best suited to your context.
Traditional Carpentry & Joinery
The Balinese people have been using bamboo for thousands of years. Their traditional bamboo knowledge runs deep and is an important part of how we build with bamboo. During the course, our local carpenters will engage with you to share their wealth of bamboo experience and knowledge to help manifest any design intent you may have.
Learn the engineering principles that make our elaborate buildings stand. Explore the possibilities and challenges on a range of structural techniques from the conventional post and beam techniques to elegant gridshell systems. By applying some of these concepts to tangible projects, you will see the opportunities, possibilities, and limitations they present.
We believe that our designs should comply to the principles of nature. You will learn how nature inspires our projects to follow organic forms, patterns, and systems alongside experienced designers. This approach to building can impact the health and wellbeing of both people and our built environment.
Bamboo model making is an art at the very core of our building process, and the models are generally used as on-site blueprints for full-scale structures. Models made out of small bamboo sticks allow us to explore the ways in which bamboo “wishes to be used”. We will take you through a series of applied workshops, and you will learn how to follow a design process that is a conversation with the material you are designing for.
ELIGIBILITY AND APPLICATIONS
The workshop is open to ages 18 +, and is tailored for people studying or working in the fields of design, architecture, engineering, construction, carpentry and for anyone inspired by bamboo and looking for ways to create a better world!
ELORA HARDY and the IBUKU Team

MIT professor and lead engineer at Atelier One, Neil is a light weight tensile engineer. He has worked on major projects including Gardens by the Bay in Singapore, Anish Kapoor’s sculptures and the Rolling Stones’ concert stages. His interest in bamboo resides in the sustainability and tensile properties of the material.
Having taught 3D design at Pratt Institute in New York for over 15 years, Scott has lectured internationally on form making and runs training workshops on abstract visualization techniques in developing hand-eye coordination. Scott now lives and works in Bali where he fell in love with bamboo while making time for his own sculpture and 2D mixed media works.
Trained in environmental sciences, Arief is considered as the world’s
