The 3 Ways To Create Amazing Curved Structures Using Bamboo
By | March 26, 2021 | Carpentry and Processing -

Bamboo has endless possibilities and when combined with creativity, it can lead to a wide range of interesting shapes. In its natural form, it is a straight, slightly tapering pole. But how do we bend it to create fluid, dynamic spaces?
- Three bending techniques: rup-rup on whole poles, split members, and lidi bundles.
- Flexibility increases as cross-sections get smaller and more solid: full poles, then splits, then lidi bundles.
- Rup-rup v-cuts weaken poles, so two or more are bolted together with threaded rods and bamboo pins.
- Lidi bundles bend in double curvature, enabling anticlastic surfaces like Dapur Naga and Green Camp.
How do you bend bamboo for construction?
Builders in Bali use three techniques to create curved bamboo structures: rup-rup, split members, and lidi bundles. Which one to use depends on flexibility, which comes from the cross-section: full poles bend least, splits bend more, and lidi bundles bend most. Rup-rup uses v-shaped cuts along whole poles, splits are flat slats cut from the culm, and lidi are thin solid whittled sticks bundled together.
What is the rup-rup technique in bamboo building?
Rup-rup means making v-shaped cuts along the axis of a whole bamboo pole wherever needed to achieve the required curve. Because cutting reduces structural integrity, two or more poles are bundled and bolted together with threaded rods and bamboo pins. It is used for structural arches, roof ridge members, furniture, and railings; the Green School Bali gym uses 18 rup-rup arches, each bundling 6 Dendrocalamus asper poles.
What are lidi bundles in bamboo architecture?
Lidi bundles are hand-whittled thin, long, solid bamboo sticks bundled together by hand and tightened with metal clamps. They can bend in three dimensions (double curvature), allowing anticlastic surfaces, and are used for both structural and decorative elements. Sharma Springs, a six-level bamboo residence designed by IBUKU, is a leading example of lidi bundle use.
