Come along with Nina as she explores the world of bamboo and crafts her own stargazing chair in the Bamboo U Build and Design course.

Last June, Nina came all the way from NEOM, Saudi Arabia, to Bali to learn more about bamboo. During the second half of the course, she focused on creating stargazing chairs with unconventional designs. Her goal through this project was not only to deepen her understanding of bamboo as a material but also to push her own boundaries and experiment with innovative designs. By challenging traditional design norms, Nina sought to inspire new approaches to sustainable building practices by experimenting with forms that defy gravity. Her stargazing chair was designed to provide a unique experience that feels like hovering off the ground, offering comfort and a new perspective on the environment.

How did the idea of crafting a Stargazing Chair come to you?

The idea for crafting the Stargazing Chair came to me as I thought about how to blend innovation with natural materials like bamboo while pushing myself to create something truly unique. From the beginning, I want to challenge traditional expectations of what a chair should be. Inspired by bamboo's strength and flexibility, I envisioned a design that defies gravity and creates a sensation of hovering or weightlessness.

Drawing from modern approaches to structural engineering, the chair integrates sustainable materials in a contemporary and unconventional manner. The design also pays homage to rope-suspended bridges, reminiscent of those designed by the renowned architect Santiago Calatrava. By capturing the elegance and functionality of these bridges, the chair embodies a sense of lightness and fluidity in its form.

Overall, this chair is my way to exploring creative concepts of antigravity, using sustainable materials, and embracing contemporary design.

I started my project by sketching out the design of the chair. Once I had a clear idea, I made a simple prototype to see how the chair would look and bring my idea of defying gravity to life. To begin, I worked with carpenters and Moko to gather all the materials I needed, focusing especially on getting plenty of planks.

With the planks ready, I began by bending and cleaning them before laminating. These laminated planks were shaped into ellipses and circles, following the designs I discussed with the carpenters. After allowing the shapes to dry, I moved on to sanding and assembling them into cross-shaped structures that would form the foundation of the chair.

This attention to detail ensures that the chair not only functions well but also captures the essence of my design concept.

After drilling the structures, I started weaving the rope to create the chair's seat and backrest. Since my project is all about creating a feeling of anti-gravity and weightlessness, I carefully adjusted the angle of the chair's backrest to ensure optimal comfort for stargazing while maintaining stability.

How do you feel about this experience and the final outcome?

From this experience, I learned a lot about how to balance form, function, and creativity to achieve a visually striking design and challenge traditional notions of gravity through innovative structural elements. It also deepened my appreciation and love for bamboo as a versatile and sustainable material.

Bamboo's natural beauty, strength, and eco-friendly properties have truly impressed me. I have come to honor the skills of the carpenters who gave me valuable hands-on experience with bamboo.

This project truly provided me with the opportunity to learn and grow as an architect and urban designer, expanding my skills and knowledge in design and structure engineering.

How did you enjoy the experience at Bamboo U?

I joined this course to broaden my horizons and connect with like-minded people. As an architect and urban designer, I understand the value of hands-on experience and learning new materials, which isn't always easy in my field.  I am grateful to the Bamboo U team and all the carpenters who patiently answered my questions and guided me through the process too.

Bamboo has always held a special place in my heart as one of the most versatile and sustainable materials available. Its potential for creativity and eco-friendliness are particularly appealing to me, and I wanted to explore all its possibilities.

During these 11 days in the course, I've experienced a lot of fun and inspiration. I am thankful for the exceptional knowledge and expertise shared throughout the program! The engaging and innovative way the material was presented has truly motivated me.

I wholeheartedly recommend this course and will definitely share my positive experience with everyone I know. Thank you, Bamboo U team, for this invaluable opportunity!
